Exposing the Shadows Through my analysis of homelessness in Spokane and this competition it became evident to design a foldable, temporary, aesthetically pleasing, and safe homeless shelter. The shelter I designed is based off the style and function of an accordion and how it contracts and expands from something small and then into something much larger. By applying this to a structure, one will be able to push and pull it until a desired length is reached and then once done with the space one can simply push it back into its smallest form. Not only can it be pushed and pulled, but, like an accordion, it also will have the capability to rotate up and down creating a standing, changing and or potentially showering place. To raise the shelter off the ground, I plan to design structural elements that would allow the shelter to latch onto the side of a building and lift it off the ground. The individual will be able to climb into the space to sleep or rest while it is perpendicular to the ground, or they can latch the shelter to a higher place to stand up in, sit up in, or shower in.
