About the Designer: I’m from Philipsburg, Germany and moved to the United States when I was 11 years old. I have fallen in love with the outdoors—camping, boating, and riding ATVs have become a huge part of my spare time in the summer. I love expressing myself through painting and drawing and am obsessed with DIY projects.
Shape Your Shelter
Shape your shelter has a fast installation time and easy changeability. The intention of this design was to allow the Spokane homeless population to adapt their home to the environment they are currently experiencing. This is done by enabling them to change the size and function of the structure with simple and easy to follow instructions. The owner can manipulate the structure to increase natural ventilation or increase the retention of heat depending on the season. The owner may choose to have their shelter be a place of gathering, a private space, a pop-up shop or an area for family or communal expansion. The folds discovered through origami studies are flexible and can be manipulated to create a space that best suits the owner. The tessellations found throughout the structure allow for natural lighting, ventilation, and personalization.
