Portable Homeless Shelter
The Portable Homeless Shelter is composed of multiple triangular pieces that come together to make the whole. Each piece is connected to another with either a rigid or flexible hinge. Flexible hinges are used to create more volume inside the shelter. I started with a basic rectangle shape with tessellation’s of triangles, and then pushed and pulled specific pieces to emphasize certain areas and add more volume to the inside for the comfort of the user. There are three different combinations that allow the user to personalize their space. The first two can be changed by pushing in and pulling out specific triangles, and the third allows the user to have a pop up shop. I chose a Douglas fir sheathing material, the grain of the wood changes direction in each tessellation to add more texture aesthetic to the shelter. Also some of the tessellation’s are painted with chalk paint to allow the user to further personalize their space.
