At the start of this project each person in our studio designed and explored their own homeless shelter. Each designer created their own solution to the competition's problem. At the end of this stage, we exhibited our designs to professionals from outside firms, professionals in the School of Design and Construction and our fellow students. Each designer was graded on a specific criteria by the professionals and voted on by the students. In the end three projects got short listed, Mobility Shelter by Paige Wagener, The Life of The Modern Nomad by Ashley Nunn, and Shape Your Shelter by Jenny Schneider. Our class then collaborated and based on time and the budget chose a design.
The chosen design was designed by Jenny Schneider, it is Shape Your Shelter. This design allows the homeless popluation to adpat their home to the environment they are experiencing or the needs they have. This can be done by changing the size and function with simple and easy to follow instructions. The shelter can be manipulated to increase the natural ventilation or increase the retention of head depending on the season. Shape your shelter has a fast installation time and easy changeability. The owner may choose to have their shelter be a place of gathering, a private space, a pop-up shop or an area for family or communal expansion.
